Did you hear that it's Monday? You know what that means:
New #SSGididit!!!
Meet Wezlynn Davis! (A lot of you already have...)

She’s been customizing skin care since 1992. That’s impressive by any standard, but consider that she is only 30 years old! Yes, she’s been customizing skin care since she was about 8 years old. No worries, there were no child labor laws broken by her Delaware, Ohio family.

As young girls, she and her sister would play “spa” at their grandmother’s house by gathering pots and big spoons and mixing together random products from their grandmother’s bathroom, kitchen and garden. The“custom blended” products were used to give their grandmother pampering facials. By indulging her little darlings, Grandma couldn’t have known that she was laying the groundwork for her granddaughter’s future. A future filled with passion, drive, enthusiasm and vision. Meet Wezlynn Davis.

Wezlynn grew up in a large family - one of six siblings - and anyone who grows up in a family so large knows that being pampered is a “splurge” that simply cannot be considered. So, it wasn’t until Wezlynn was enrolled as an esthetics student at The Spa School that she received her first facial. Even before that first facial, Wezlynn knew that she MUST have a career in which she would help others feel their best. And after receiving that facial, she knew that being an esthetician would be the perfect career to feed her desire to make others happy. During her time at The Spa School, the Healing Hands Program was in its infancy. This program was started at The Spa School to help meet the special skin care needs of cancer patients. It also aimed to provide respite to cancer patients and their caregivers by offering gentle skin care treatments at low or no cost. The Healing Hands program really spoke to Wezlynn’s heart - but she couldn’t have known then that her career would lead her full circle back to the Healing Hands program (more on that later!) Meet Wezlynn Davis-Esthetician.

After graduating from The Spa School and receiving her Managing Esthetics license, Wezlynn became the national sales director for Mukha Essentials, the cosmetics line of Mukha Custom Cosmetics & Medi-Spa. (BTW - owner Tim Maurer is a grad of The Spa School!) This mineral based, custom blended line of products excited Wezlynn and she enjoyed spreading the word about the product to salons across the United States. She not only learned a great deal about custom blending products, she began gaining valuable sales and marketing skills.

After leaving Mukha, Wezlynn went on to work for power-house cosmetics retailer, Sephora. It was during this time that she gained a better understanding of marketing, learning what customers want from products, staff training, management and product design and development. She states that her time at Sephora was almost like earning a degree because of the crucial business experience that she acquired.

Coming from a family of small business owners, she also knew that she wanted to keep her family close to her and involved in the business. She already had her cosmetologist sister, Rozie, by her side but she also wanted to add her Mom, Sarah, to the mix! So in 2012 Sarah attended The Spa School and became a licensed Managing Esthetician - like daughter, like mother!

Just shy of five years afer her own graduation from The Spa School, Wezlynn opened The Beauty Lab. Starting out in a little 10 x 10 room inside of a hair salon, she and her sister began growing their clientele. Not long after, she opened her own store front in the heart of historic downtown Delaware, Ohio. Her vision for this space was clear and she moved forward to renovate the space with her client’s comfort in mind. In her heart Wezlynn knew that the Beauty Lab would be a success. And, indeed it is! Meet Wezlynn Davis-Entrepreneur.

For sure, giving a great facial feeds her desire to lift people up, but she never forgot how gratifying it was to actually mix the ingredients that she used for her first client, Grandma. While at the Spa School, Wezlynn was thrilled to be exposed to quality products such as Pevonia and Eminence Organics. Eminence, especially, piqued her interest in product design and development.

Using her education and experience, Wezlynn developed her own product line with the clear focus on client customization. Part of her mission statement sums up her vision perfectly:
“We don’t categorize you...we customize for you. We have a passion for fine ingredients, fail-you-not formulas and finding your flawless beauty! We specialize in result driven skin services, custom formulated skin care and custom blended cosmetics.” Not satisfied with mass produced products, she partnered with a bio-chemist to develop her very own line. Sounds like that little girl on her Grandma’s front stoop, doesn’t it?!

Her apothecary style of product customization allows her to custom tailor her cleansers, toners, scrubs, moisturizers and serums by “infusing” them with a power punch of ingredients the are chosen to address the EXACT concerns of each client. We all know that everyone has different skin care needs. But think about it, our OWN skin care needs change from time to time. Weather, illness, diet, trauma, age...all can cause our skin to misbehave. It is quite possible that each time you receive a facial at The Beauty Lab it will involve a different “cocktail” of infusions than you received the time before. Other brands throw the word “customization” around a lot - THIS is true customization!

Wezlynn’s vision and innovation did not go unnoticed by us here at Salon Schools Group. We were so impressed with her ingenuity, that we hired her to design and develop our new Healing Hands product line. When our Healing Hands program was first launched, Wezlynn was our student and loved the Healing Hands concept. So it was no surprise that Wezlynn jumped on board! Her involvement even includes logo design, package design, curriculum development and student/staff training. I guess we share her belief that you keep family close. And we consider Wezylnn our family! Meet Wezlynn Davis-Mad Scientist

It must have been fate that Wezlynn chose to pursue her education at The Spa School. Her dedication to family, her passion for making people happy and her commitment to elevating the beauty industry is shared by the staff at Salon Schools Group. It is heart warming to hear Wezlynn reminisce about her days in school - to hear her express her appreciation that we took the time to help her develop as an individual and not set limits to what she could learn and achieve. She mentions that she appreciates the support that was offered to her, even after graduation - but isn’t that what family is for? Meet Wezlynn Davis- Proud Graduate

For week nine of I Did It, let's meet a dynamic duo, featuring #SSGgrad Manda Martinkovich and her sister, Lauren Hunter!

Sisters, Sisters! There were never such devoted sisters!

...Mary Kate & Ashley; Venus & Serena; Ashley & Wynonna; Manda & Lauren...

Manda & Lauren? They may not be famous, YET! But, with their determination, passion, smarts and vision, it’s only a matter of time until everyone will know their names!

Meet sisters Manda Martinkovich and Lauren Hunter - the owners of The W Nail Bar at 946 N. High Street in the ultra-cool Short North District of Columbus. The salon opened in April 2015, but business is already booming! And it’s no wonder - once you meet this dynamic duo, you want to be in their presence as often as possible. Their excitement is contagious and their dedication is evident.

More than once, they openly admitted that they are different - but they understand that it’s the differences that make their relationship - and their salon - work so well.

Where one is more “earthy” and rooted, the other is more “romantic” and fluid. The “W” Fragrance candle was custom made for them by The Boston Candle Company. The scent is a blend that reflects both their “earthy” and “romantic” personalities...the best of both of them! They obviously took great care in designing the decor of the salon - it’s beautiful - but even in decorating, their different personalities emerge. Manda described it as “The Palace of Versailles meets Restoration Hardware”!

For sure there are many traits that they share...work ethic, ambition, vision, kindness, intelligence and strength. Not to mention a goofy sense of humor (I’ll bet they didn’t think I noticed!) But here’s the thing...they are the soul of this salon.

Manda is a graduate of The Spa School from both our Esthetics program (2012) and our Manicuring program (2013). Always a worker, she maintained a high level position in the corporate world while attending school during the evenings and on Saturdays. She also managed to marry her husband and have a baby - an incredibly adorable baby! - in those few short years.
Prior to her corporate gig, she had an entirely different gig - as a singer, fundraiser and actress with the Shadowbox Live Theater Company in Columbus. She’s even recorded an album! Creative people often don’t limit their artistic abilities to one medium - Manda is a perfect example.

Lauren, who is a mere 25 years old, also has an impressive resume! While she didn’t pursue a manicuring or esthetics license, she did start honing her organizational, management and communications skills beginning at the tender age of 16 when she became a pilates instructor. Not long after, she began managing lululemon atheltica where she led a multi-milliion dollar business through staff development and brand building in her community. The incredible leadership, team-building and motivational skills that she developed in this time makes her a perfect fit to be a business partner and manager of The W Nail Bar.

Combined, these sisters have the background to make a successful business. And this is evident in every detail of The W Nail Bar. Much thought and research went into deciding where to locate the business, when to open it, who to hire, how to decorate and what to offer. The sisters did their homework. They knew that the Short North had become a mecca for the arts and for art lovers. Restaurants, galleries and specialized retail shops abound - it seemed a perfect fit for their concept of an inviting, luxurious, yet affordable nail salon. They quickly have settled into the Short North and are already working with other business owners who are determined to see the area thrive as a true “community”. Since art is a strong theme along N. High Street, they see their salon as a perfect venue to promote artists. Currently, they are featuring the photography of Kris Misevski whose striking black and white photos offer interest and excitement in this beautiful space.

Speaking of the space - you really need to see it - or rather - experience it. Everything the sisters have done has been done to create an experience. Everything you see, touch and smell has been thoughtfully and deliberately considered. From the reception desk custom made from recycled barn wood, to the 20 year old comfy couch (courtesy of Mom) to the hand-pounded metal “W” logo that was lovingly made by a friend, to the custom plumbing that was designed to accommodate the ultra cool copper pedicure tubs - you know that this salon is a true labor of love.

But there is so much more! As luck would have it, the building itself was already a gem before they added their touches. The carefully preserved, original wood floor and the gorgeous stamped ceiling add visual interest and a sense of warmth to the space. A cool gray wall with custom shelving is the perfect backdrop to display nail polish, custom candles, pedicure “condiments”, and the ingredients for their “made daily” sugar scrub.

Again, it’s all about the experience. When Manda and Lauren first considered making this dream a reality, they thought about what they personally would want from a salon experience. And they both agreed that they wanted a clean, comfortable, non-intimidating and inviting environment; friendly and skilled staff who offer skill, attention and personalization; a luxurious yet affordable menu of services. And from what was witnessed - they’ve accomplished all of these goals!

Going to a new salon - especially one so beautiful - can be intimidating. Never fear! There is no intimidation at The W! From the moment you walk in you’ll be joined by your manicurist who will walk you through the service and tell you what to expect. They’ll even help you pick your nail color based on your preference, your skin tone and your activities. No acrylic nails are offered here - just natural and gel manicures and pedicures - decadent ones, of course!

Don’t be surprised if you see a “W” pop up in your neighborhood! The master plan is to expand into other areas of central Ohio (first in Dublin, Powell and New Albany) then on to every state in America! They intend for their growth to be over the next several years and it will be consistent with their flagship Short North salon, so no matter which “W” you visit, you’ll have a consistently wonderful experience. One change that will occur - skin care services! Manda is anxious to put her esthetics training to great use. If you think her pedicures are pampering - imagine her facials!

Manda was very gracious in extending her thanks to The Spa School for providing her with the extensive training that she received in both esthetics and manicuring. She was especially impressed with the skill of the instructors, the beauty of the school, the innovative curriculum and the encouragement she received from the staff, especially school manager, Stephanie Nixon. She became very close with her fellow students who came to be like family. This theme continues at her salon where she treats her staff like family. She pays them a very competitive salary (no booth rental here!) offers education and special events and takes an active interest in their personal lives. And, of course, she loves to hire graduates of The Spa School.

Family is their priority and it’s reflected in their words - “The concept behind the W and the inspiration for its name all stem from the WE. There is nothing more important for us than family...” Yes, the “W” certainly stands for “WE” but it also stands for “WOW”!

For I Did It #8 meet Michael Puccetti!
1973 graduate of Ohio State School of Cosmetology,
Owner of Michael Puccetti Hair at Upper Arlington Salon Lofts

"Stylist, sculptor and all-around cool guy"

When you meet Michael, you can’t imagine him being anything other than a hair stylist. Skill and education aside, Michael has that “it” factor...he loves people and people love him. Now, combine that with his absolute passion for hair, his incredible background of education and his constant curiosity and you’ve got the perfect formula for a stellar stylist. We are proud that he is our graduate!

His story has an unusual beginning. When Michael was an ornery 15 year old he went to the local swimming pool with his cousin - who just happened to be in cosmetology school. That ordinary excursion to the swimming pool would plant a seed in his mind. You see, also at the pool that day was a cute young girl with long hair and a short bathing suit. This beauty asked Michael to trim her hair. He quickly grabbed his cousin’s shears from her bag (never leave home without them!) and proceeded to trim her hair. Hanging out at the pool with a pretty girl wanting his attention? Not a bad day. He didn’t know then that this trip to the pool would determine his direction in life.

Michael’s father was a sculptor, so he wasn’t surprised that he enjoyed the arts. In fact, he attended the Columbus College of Art & Design after high school. But CCAD at the time offered more editorial design and Michael was more interested in painting and exploring shapes -so he left - only to be drafted! After serving a stint in Viet Nam, Michael realized that the day at the pool represented “heaven” after he’d seen “hell” during the war. Determined to have a career that would make him happy every day, he enrolled at Ohio State School of Cosmetology. And he’s never looked back.

It was great to see his reaction when, during our interview, we received a surprise visit from Salon Schools Group President Emeritus, Sue Carter Moore. How fun to hear the two of them reminisce about Michael’s days in cosmetology school when Sue was his instructor. But more impressively, it was incredible to hear them discuss how they both benefit from, and contribute to, cosmetology education today. It never ends - thank goodness! Successful cosmetologists know that their education never ends. It is humbling to hear him say that he owes a debt to Sue Carter Moore and Jim Rogers who “took him on” when they taught him at OSSC. He credits them for seeing something special in him, encouraging him to continue to follow his passion and for looking past his penchant for shenanigans! They knew his heart.

Over the years, Michael has explored many avenues of the beauty industry. He’s worked as a stylist in others’ salons, he’s managed salons, he’s owned his own salon, he’s been a platform artist and he’s been an educator. With each position he’s brought, and shared, his passion for the art of beauty.

In every artistic industry there are “greats”. With fashion it’s Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton. In film it’s Hitchcock, Minelli, Scorsese. In painting - Dali, Rembrandt, Monet
In beauty it’s Sassoon, Mitchell, Sahag. Michael was fortunate enough to work with and study under Paul Mitchell and John Sahag. In fact, Michael became an educator with Sahag and continues to specialize in the dry haircutting that made Sahag famous (think Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow). Michael’s next venture includes introducing the Midwest to a new line of products developed by the Vidal Sassoon company. You can also find Michael in his salon - still making people smile, still making women look and feel beautiful.

How lucky for Michael that he found his passion. When others ask him how they can find their own passion, he asks them “what would you do if you didn’t need money?” You’d do the “thing” you love - THAT’S what you do! He never wondered how much money he would make. He just knew he was meant to touch people, to give them a lift, to show them the love, to make them a star!

So the next time someone asks you to go to the swimming pool - GO! You never know if it will change your life!
