Beatrice and Mary Bustin opened Bustin Beauty School in 1935 – probably never dreaming that today it would be going strong as Salon Schools Group.
In the early ’50s, the sisters sold the school to George and Lillia Townsend, who changed the name to Ohio State. The era was one of growth and prosperity and the school expanded until, by the early ’60s, the enterprise consisted of four beauty schools throughout Ohio, one barber school, and a beauty supply house.
By 1968, however, the good times ground to a halt (as did good fashion sense). The death of George Townsend and a tighter economy saw the empire reduced to one beauty school in downtown Columbus. At this time, Mrs. Townsend sold the school to Lou Farber, a local entrepreneur with experience in the school industry.
Under Mr. Farber’s ownership, and the guidance of some of our current administrators, the school expanded to several locations and a student dormitory, until it became Ohio’s largest beauty school. When Mr. Farber retired in 1980, he sold the school to James Rogers who had been the Director of Operations through the years of growth.
In 1986, a Barber Styling school was added. Named “The Hair Experts Barber School”, it remains one of the largest and most modern barber schools in Ohio.
In 1997, Nationwide Beauty Academy joined the Group. The NBA program is quite different from the Ohio State Schools of Cosmetology programs, emphasizing salon mentoring and the shorter stylist program.
As the new century began, we added The Spa School. This facility teaches all aspect of Spa education, and offers many exotic Spa services for skin, hair and nails. Next, we added our WestPointe School – Nationwide Beauty Academy & Spa Studio – featuring the newest technology in Spa services and multiple wet rooms for performing the many varied Spa services. The year 2010 proved to be one of our most exciting! After many years in Reynoldsburg, we moved our East location of Ohio State School of Cosmetology to the Southeast Columbus suburb of Canal Winchester. We were so excited about Canal Winchester – we moved our Barber school there, too! This beautiful 12,000+ square foot facility comes complete with an expanded barber clinic, a spacious and ultra-modern cosmetology clinic and a stunning Spa area that we call Spa Bella – one visit here and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to Venice!
2010 also took us to the city of Heath, Ohio where we opened a new location of Ohio State School of Cosmetology. After many years operating successfully as American School of Hair and serving the needs of students and clients in Licking, Knox, Coschocton, Muskingum and surrounding counties, we are happy to be a new member of this warm community.
Currently, Salon Schools Group teaches Cosmetology, Barber Styling, Nail Technology and Spa and Esthetics Training. As in past years, the growth has come not from a desire to expand, but from a desire to be the best at teaching “careers you can live with.” We are proud of our history, after all- how many businesses that began during the Great Depression are still around today?
We are also proud of our experience- our management has remained the same since 1968, and our administrators and faculty total over 500 years (collectively that is!) educating and improving the beauty profession!
Know anyone who has a pet hedgehog, much less two hedgehogs? Then meet Sabrina Walden, “mommy” of Murff and Cutie, also mother of one human. Sabrina will be involved in every aspect in your term as a student as she assists other staff members in making your education relevant, fun and hassle free!
While grounded firmly in reality (mostly) she enjoys other-worldly pursuits through MARCON (Multiple Alternate Reality Convention) – with Steam Punk being her favorite alternate genre and Sci Fi being her favorite reading material. (Werewolf? There wolfe!)
Don’t let her makeup, stylish nails and red hair fool you. Janice knows her way around…horses! Raised in Pennsylvania-Dutch Country (yes she speaks that as well as French), Janice is an equestrian of some note, (English Side-Saddle) placing 4th representing Pennsylvania at Madison Square Garden in NYC, during an International Competition.
Now focusing on different manes, Janice has more connections in the Ohio beauty industry than just about anybody. As the long time “face” of Nationwide Beauty Academy and The Spa School, Janice has placed dozens and dozens of SSG graduates in Ohio salons. If there is a salon job opening, Janice knows about it because our graduates are so much in demand.
Janice will be the first to tell you, don’t be brand-washed! Call her at 614-888-1092 to join our family of locally-owned independent schools. Janice works from her office in Columbus, not from another time-zone.
